Air Guns

March 31st, 2011

Justin Kander asked:

Air guns are not airsoft guns, as they function quite differently and are much more powerful. They are classified as pneumatic (that means using gas to do work in science and technology, thank you Wikipedia) guns, and they have many different operational styles.

One must know that air guns are not new, in fact, they go back as far as the 1400s. They were favorable to alternative types of firearms because of their speed (back then it was fast), quietness, and low visibility. Air guns could be fired more times than other times of guns and did not make very loud sounds or put out clouds of smoke. They are also very powerful, and that is what is covered next.

Three main methods are available for powering air guns; spring-piston, gas-ram, and pneumatic. Spring piston air guns are pumped by cocking the barrel or a level. The strength required to **** is directly proportional to the power of the air gun. Typically, spring pistons shoot pellets at the speed of sound. They operate through an internal spring-loaded piston, which is pulled back and locked into a sear. After pulling the trigger, the piston is released and compresses air heavily in a chamber directly behind the pellet, and that pressure pushes the pellet out through the barrel. Many modern spring piston guns have a battery to automatically **** the gun, and although many are single-shot and are loaded through a breech (like a shotgun), advancements have allowed multi-shot spring piston guns.

Gas-ram air guns are quite interesting, in the fact that their spring is gas itself. There is a small amount of gas in a chamber behind the pellet, and after cocking, that air becomes much more pressurized. Gas-rams are much more efficient and overall better than spring pistons because of their durability and advanced accuracy, although they do cost more.

Finally, there is pneumatic, which is separated into several different categories. First of all, pneumatic guns use only gas to project the pellets; you pump, gas is compressed, pull the trigger, gas pushes the pellet out. This sounds a lot like gas-ram but, although it is similar, it is not the same. In gas-ram there is already some gas inside the chamber, and that gas is further compressed, but in pneumatic, each pump there is fresh gas. There are two types of regular pneumatic guns; multi-stroke and single-stroke. In multi-stroke guns, the pump must be pulled over one time for a sufficient shot, while single-stroke guns only require one pump. Multi-stroke pneumatic air guns are the most popular and cheapest kind of air gun.

Pre-Charged Pneumatic air guns, PCP, are filled with air by a high pressure hand pump or a diving cylinder (like what scuba divers use). After filling the gas chamber with gas, you can fire without having to constantly refill the chamber. The amount of shots one gets completely depends on the time of PCP gun used.

Due to the speed and ammunition used with air guns, they cannot be used in a game like airsoft. Unlike airsoft guns, several different calibers, ranging from 4.5mm 6.35mm, are available, and the ammunition includes the lead pellet (most popular) and steel BB. You would not want to get shot with one of those!

Air guns are many times a hunter’s weapon of choice due to the near silence and adequate power of an air gun. Air guns can easily kill small, or, in some cases, large animals, and the shots do not scare away nearby targets (unlike firearms). Air guns are mainly used for marksmanship practice, hunting, pest control (that’s right), and target shooting. The Olympics have featured marksmanship events which utilized air guns, and this attests to their relative popularity.

I’m looking to buy a Benjamin & Sheridan model 392 air rifle, Is this a pretty good rifle?

March 27th, 2011

Javierr88 asked:

I’ve been through 3 air guns that i didnt like. The Wather c02 sport, the crosman 1337 and the crosman break barrel .177 rifle. the wather ****** because it shot a mere 375 fps and it would go through co2 cartridges like every 40th bullet. the crosman 1337 was plastic with only a steel barrel. and the crosman break barrel was too heavy and too powerful like 1000fps. my father has a benjamin sheridan blue streak that he bought from the 70’s. and it works great and i like it so i just wanted to know if this model 392 would be good and last long like his.

Nick Moseley asked:

After selling rifle scopes on eBay for 6 years I can say with absolute certainty that the one area that confuses prospective new scope owners more than any is the choice of scope mounts. The good news is that unless your rifle is an unusual or vintage type then choosing the right scope mounts is simple. In this

Air-Rifle Hunting, Rabbit hunt 2, 14 jun 2010.

March 24th, 2011

HuntersVermin asked:

This is another rabbit hunt I filmed through the week as the weather was so nice I just had to get out with the rifle. Unfortunately I wounded a rabbit in this film but thankfully managed to dispatch it cleanly with another shot. I know we can’t always guarantee a clean kill even though we would like too, as some times something can go wrong, weather it be a bad call of judgement or something wrong with your rifle. But we should always follow up a wounded animal and dispatch it cleanly with a follow up shot when ever possible.

Airsoft Gas Guns - CO2 Vs Green Gas

March 24th, 2011

Suzanne McKenna asked:

Gas airsoft guns are one of three types of guns used in airsoft. While Spring-loaded guns need to be hand-cocked each time and electric guns run on battery power, gas guns are fueled by gasses such as CO2 and Green Gas. These gasses are stored in the gun either within the gun magazine or in disposable tanks. The appeal of gas guns is the realistic blowback function of the gun. This simulates the recoil felt when firing a real pistol.

CO2 comes in disposable tanks and is a high pressured gas. For this reason, you need to make sure that you have a well made gun to withstand the pressure created by the blowback. These tanks are stored in the magazine and you can get up to 72 shots per cartridge.

Green gas is the most popular gas used because it is a low pressure propellant. Green gas is just propane mixed with silicone. It comes in cans with a nozzle that can be inserted directly into the guns’ magazine. Some people prefer to use a propane tank to fill their guns. For this you will need to buy an adaptor for your propane tank and silicone to mix it with.

Gas airsoft guns are extremely fun because they are so realistic and because of the power propelling the BB. It is very important to follow the manufacturers’ recommendations in order to keep from damaging your airsoft gun. This of course is important because you always want your gear in good working condition.

Fun Airsoft Pistol Games For All Ages

March 20th, 2011

Sarah Porter asked:

Airsoft Pistol for Fun Pistols Airsoft Games

While most of the versions of Airsoft games require the use of high-powered semiautomatic or automatic weapons, another version can be played with just an Airsoft pistol or two. These games require a bit more skill and stealth and are one of the better choices for indoor Airsoft matches. There are a number of types of game types that are ideal for playing with airsoft pistols. Some of these options are listed below.

Manhunt Using Pistol Airsoft

If you enjoy playing evening matches, a manhunt game can be a good one to use with an airsoft revolver. In this set-up, one of the people playing is designated as the prey. You might have a scenario in which he or she is an escaped convict or criminal, for example. The rest of the team members are the hunters. Generally, the prey is given a head start to make his/her way into the gaming field. Depending on the rules you want to use, the prey can either have weapons or not. The hunters try to shoot the prey. One of the main rules though is that hunters are not allowed to shoot at one another. You can even incorporate a penalty for players that violate this rule. The winner of the match is the hunter who shoots the prey. Alternatively, if the prey is allowed to have a weapon, he/she could win by hitting all of the hunters.

Cops & Robbers and Your Airsoft Handgun

While the name may conjure up a more innocence time of childish playing, this can be a serious and high-energy handgun airsoft match. As the name suggests, your team is going to break into two groups. One group is going to be the robbers. Of course, they could also be any type of criminal. The other team members are going to be the cops. Within your team, create some type of scenario that could be a useful backdrop for your match. For example, the robbers may have just led you on a high speed chase or they may be holding hostages in a bank. Obviously, the first team that loses all its members is the loser. If you want to heighten the tension a bit, let the criminals use any weapon they want while limiting the cops to only pistols.

Airsoft Pistols Juggernaut

You can use an airsoft pistol to play this type of game as well, although other types of weapons could be used instead. This type of game is almost the opposite of Manhunt. In this version, one person takes on the role of the Juggernaut. He or she is responsible for trying to shoot all of the other players. Of course, the Juggernaut is also fair game as a target. If he or she is hit, the other player becomes the Juggernaut and the match continues on. When only one team member if left standing, the game ends and that player is declared the winner.

These are just a few examples of some of the airsoft pistol possibilities available. Using the pistol is definitely going to make any match more challenging. Make sure you are prepared to tackle the challenge before you get to the field.
