What is the best (accurate) way to measure the velocity of an air rifle pellet?

November 8th, 2008

Since the speed of a air rifle pellet approaches the speed of sound this looks like a daunting task. Any suggestions on how I can accurately measure the speed of a pellet fired from an air rifle? Certainly a stop watch will not work as the speed of sound will be a cause of error.
Your help/suggestions are most appreciated.

Place a microphone equa-distant from the barrel of the gun and the target. Digitaly record the sound of the shot. Analyse the audio.

take the rifle down to the bating range…or
    Speed: s = tn = Ö(l/v²) = t/lv
    Velocity: v = ln = l/ts = El/h = Ö(l/s²)

use a digital chronograph, such as the one listed in the source window below….good for 56-7000 fps, which will definitely encompass the velocity of your air rifle.
