Rifle Scopes - How to Make a Good Choice

May 11th, 2011

Rick Powers asked:

Selecting a rifle scope that will fit your shooting and hunting needs is no small task. There is a large variety of rifle scopes on the market and an endless amount of reading and research that can be done when looking for the perfect rifle scope for your situation. However, you can drastically cut the time it takes to find a scope that is right for you by following the five steps below.

Step 1) Decide on a budget for your scope, like houses, cars are anything else the choices here go from cheap to astronomical. While your budget will depend on your individual financial situation; the biggest mistake a lot of hunters and shooters make is under spending on their rifle scope. A custom rifle that shoots ¼” groups is useless if its scope won’t hold zero. Many serious hunters suggest spending as much on your scope as you do on your rifle; while this isn’t bad advice it isn’t always practical, but you can save yourself a lot of headaches and trouble by budgeting a minimum of $100 for your next scope.

Step 2) Determine what magnification is appropriate for your hunting or shooting style. If your shots are usually taken at a relatively close range a lower magnification is desirable as it gives the shooter a wide field of view for quickly acquiring the target. On the other hand higher magnification models are preferable for long distance shots, or shots at small targets where precision, not speed, is the name of the game. Many hunters find a scope with a variable power range like a 3-9x to be versatile enough to cover their hunting needs.

Step 3) Select an appropriate reticle (crosshair). There is an enormous amount of choice in reticles these days. However, the big decision here is generally to go with a standard duplex style reticle or a mil-dot style reticle. A duplex crosshair is where the crosshairs start out thick on the edge and then steps down to a finer crosshair in the middle where target is centered. A mil-dot style reticle has hold over marks below the intersection of the crosshairs and these marks are used as aiming points on distant targets.

Step 4) Choose a finish that is appropriate for your gun. Scopes are available in a wide variety of finishes. The most popular finishes are matte, gloss, camo, or silver. Matte black is a dull black finish that goes well with many of today’s blued rifle barrels. Gloss black is a popular choice for rifles with a dark shiny bluing often found on high end rifles with wood stocks; however, they can also look quite good on synthetic rifles with stainless barrels. Camo scopes are a good choice for many of the camo rifles on the market as long as the patterns are somewhat similar. Finally, silver scopes usually look the best on rifles with bright stainless barrels.

Step 5) Pick an objective size that is right for you shooting style. As a rule of thumb the larger the objective the more light is gathered making for a brighter sight picture; however, the tradeoff is a larger size. So it is important to select a scope with an objective size that will let enough light in but not be too big for your rifle setup.

Ruger 10/22 Rifle Stock and Barrel Mods

March 12th, 2011

dj fresno asked:

Whether a Ruger 10/22 was your first rifle or not, odds are there is more than enough room in your gun collection for a 10/22 rifle. A ruger 10 22 rifle is perfect for a beginning shooter as well as a seasoned distance shooter whether scoped, open sight or otherwise. The great part about the 10 22 rifle itself is the many mods and tweaks that can be done and very inexpensively. Here are a few common but “need to do to shoot better” mods that can take your out of the box 10/22 and turn it into a sharp shooting plinker.

10/22 Rifle Stock Mods

Currently there are well over 30 aftermarket and original stocks that you can use for your ruger 10/22 rifle. If you are looking to build up a tactical 1022 then there are plenty of aftermarket rifle stocks for you to choose from. There are also many rifle stocks for the 10/22 and it really depends on the setup that you are going after as well as the style in which you shoot.

10/22 Rifle Barrel Mods

Getting a new barrel for your ruger 10/22 will not only make your rifle look nice but it will shoot much more accurate. Most aftermarket barrels for the 10/22 are inexpensive but can be priced over a couple hundred dollars depending on the level of upgrading you are after.

There are the bull barrels and also the stock replacement upgraded barrels which you can choose from as well.

10/22 Rifle Magazine Mods

Depending on your country and state there is a mass amount of extended clips both metal and plastic to choose from. If you can legally own an extended magazine for your 10/22 then you can get banana and drum clips. Before adding any magazine or any modification to your 10/22 rifle make sure and check with your local and state laws so you don’t have any issues later on.

The above ruger 1022 mods are the main mods that can and should be done to your rifle to get it not only shooting true but on target non stop. A fully built 10/22 could cost a couple hundred on up to over a grand but no matter how you setup your rifle all that matters is that you are satisfied with the build and the mods.

Whether you are looking for cheap 10/22 stocks or a scope for your .22 don’t forget to check out http://www.donluttrull.com/ruger-rifle-10-22-stocks-barrels-and-accessories.php which you can locate in the author box at the bottom of this article as well. No matter which mods you make to the rifle you will be sure to love it and keep it for a very long time.

How to Improve Your Rifle Shooting Skills

November 14th, 2010

Johann Jules asked:

Even the top hunters miss easy targets from time to time. Remember that nobody is perfect, so if anyone claims he or she has never missed a target, it could be that he or she doesn’t really hunt that much, or just plain lying. It takes years of experience in order for one to become a skilled shooter. As you acquire experience in shooting with a rifle, you become more familiar with the characteristics of your rifle. This familiarity makes it easier for you to anticipate things that affect your shooting.

For someone who is new at rifle shooting, do not be dismayed with the time you should spend improving your skill. There are many ways a newbie can easily and quickly develop his or her shooting skill. Although patience and consistent practice are the two main things every new shooter has to have, knowledge of caliber, trigger control, breathing, and upgrading your gun barrel through cryogenic treatment are but a few things that can help you as you start out.

In this article, I will explain to you the things I mentioned above. I hope that these tips will help you develop the skills needed for you to consistently hit your targets in the future.

1. CALIBER

Recoil, as well as muzzle flash, are two unpleasant things a shooter encounters when using a good sized caliber rifle. Both are unquestionably the price one has to pay for hunting big game.

But for new shooters, you really don’t need to use high caliber rifles. Remember, you are just starting out. You need to start, and become familiar with the basics first. With that said, start with a caliber.22.

Aside from the fact that the bullets are really cheap,.22 caliber rifles eliminates the noise and the strain on ones shoulder that comes with every shot made with higher caliber rifles. Shooting with this caliber will teach you all the basics of shooting distant targets and at the same time let you hunt small game.

2. TRIGGER CONTROL

Experienced shooters will tell you that jerking the trigger is the main problem encountered by marksmen. And the thing is, it is easy to develop this bad habit.

The right way do it is to use constant, gentle force right up till the trigger “breaks” and the gun fires. Seasoned firing instructors firmly insist that whenever firing a rifle, the action must be a surprise to the individual.

What I’m trying to say is that, you as the shooter won’t be able to predict the shot. You need to master how to let go of the awareness that the gun is going to fire, even though you are fully aware that it is about to. I know that it sounds more like a zen thing, but that is a fact.

The most effective method in developing correct trigger control is to utilize a dust free, sharp, relatively light trigger. Be careful though, a trigger that is too light raises the possibility of misfires. Most shooter agree that the most desirable trigger pull is around 2 1/2 to 3 lbs.

Out of the box, rifles don’t have this set-up. So you have to take the unit to a gunsmith and inform him that you want your trigger pull modified.

3. BREATHING

This has to be one of the hardest things I had to master when I was starting out. Just like in trigger control, this has to become second nature to the shooter.

To do this, the shooter takes in a few deep breaths, then let out part of it while simultaneously squeezing the trigger. The idea might be easy, but I tell you it is not. With this one, constant practice is the only solution.

Now we come to the last piece of the puzzle. Unlike the first 3 tips, this one is not a skill that needs to be developed, but an upgrade to your unit. This upgrade is Cryogenic Treatment.

Cryogenic treatment is a process where metal is subjected to ultra low temperatures, which changes its structural components. The outcome is a metal that is stronger, and more resistant to wear and tear.

I subjected one of my rifle barrels to this process almost a couple years back, and till now, it still performs well. It also tends to keep the accumulation of residue at a minimal, making barrel cleaning a breeze.

What kind of air gun or break barrel has a good long range accuracy?

April 7th, 2010

Lapulapu asked:

That can hit at least 40 yards away and still be able to kill a bird.
I have a Crosman Remington Air Master and it’s calibrated and accurate at 45 feet range. I want to get another one and keep the Air Master for short range so I don’t have to worry about breaking something behind the target and you cannot apply that to a gun with a 1000 fps or 1200 fps.
