The Easy Way to Sight-In an Air Rifle Scope
May 26th, 2010
ArcherAirguns asked:
Sight-in your scope-fitted air rifle in only two or three shots by following Stephen Archer’s simple instructions shown here. You “see through the scope” for a clear understanding of the steps.

@lokomakao How far apart are your shots? The problem is most likely your pellet choice. If your 160 is anything like my 180 it hates cheap pellets. Check out my channel and sub me.

Can you please tell me how the mildots work, i was told the first one on the bottom is for targets that are 10 yards closer and the one above is for targets 10 yards farther, but that doesnt make sense.
Can you please explain.

@lokomakao try different pellets the fit is critical, there are various head sizes this makes a huge effect on accuracy.

That’s not how you focus a scope, the eve piece focuses the x hair.
The front lens or the adjustable objective sometimes referred to as parallax adjustment is what you focus the target with.
You need to zero with the same hold as you will be using, a rest will get you close but you’ll still need to tune it in for real use.

@darktim99 no it wasnt the pellets or if i have dropped it or if the barrel is wobbly, it was that the rifle had much time without using and the barrel was dirty of plomb, and thanks friends!!!

@ArcherAirguns With that being said, A scope is a disadvantage so to speak, if one is not an expert in this matter, as I used to have a rifle without scope and my shoot were pretty much more accurate than they are now! with a scope!!! the problem now is that I just bought a Gamo 1200 and it doesnt have a regular sight it cames with a scope… what a boomer!

oh yah, one more thing… is the mildot above, 10 yards further.
I was told that but doesnt really make sense cause if so, it means that pellets curves upwards when being shot.
Please explain how to use mildots on scopes.
thank you.

Is it true that if the scope is sighted at 20 yards, the first mildot below is sighted for 10 yards? if so, please explain.

It’s very difficult to answer this without looking at the gun and the target. The only time I’ve had this type of problem is when I shot .177 caliber pellets through a .22 air rifle by mistake. Are you using .22 cal pellets with your 160? And your English is MUCH better than my Spanish

Yes, that’s why I show a sock full of sand as a viable (but less good) alternative to a rifle rest in the video. Shooting indoors simply removes any effect from wind. This technique can be used outdoors on a windless day also.

All pellets (or bullets from firearms) slow down and drop with increasing distance due to air resistance and gravitational attraction. So, if an air rifle is sighted-in at 10 yards, it will shoot low at 30 yards (for example) Yes, you will need to adjust the elevation for different distances, but knowing that you are on-target at 10 yards makes it much easier to adjust for longer ranges.
